What Is Cabretta Leather? Why It Matters for Golf Gloves

If you've ever picked up a premium Cabretta leather golf glove and wondered why it feels nothing like the ten-dirham synthetic on the rack beside it, the answer is in the hide itself. Cabretta is a fine-grain lambskin — exceptionally soft, remarkably durable, and prized for the one quality a golfer cares about above all else: feel.

What Cabretta leather actually is

Cabretta comes from hair sheep rather than wool sheep — a distinction that matters. Hair-sheep hides produce a tighter, finer grain than cowhide or goatskin, which is why the leather can be tanned thin without losing strength. The result is a material that sits close to the skin, breathes in the heat, and transmits every vibration from the grip directly to your hand.

That tactile feedback is the entire point of a golf glove. A glove isn't armour — it's an interface. The thinner and more responsive the leather, the more honestly you feel the club, and the more confidently you can swing.

Cabretta vs. synthetic

Synthetic gloves have their place — they're cheaper, they shrug off rain, and they last. But they trade away the two things Cabretta does best. First, grip: Cabretta's natural grain produces a tackiness that synthetics imitate but never match, especially once the glove is warm and broken in. Second, fit: genuine lambskin stretches and moulds to your hand over the first few rounds, becoming something close to custom. A synthetic glove fits the same on round fifty as it did on round one — which is to say, it never quite fits.

Cheaper leathers sit somewhere in between. Cowhide is durable but stiff; goatskin is soft but coarser-grained. Neither delivers the combination of softness and thinness that makes Cabretta the standard for tour-level gloves.
